Many clients have read all the hypes on consuming healthy fatty acids; they ran to the store, or order a bonified healthy fat from the Internet. To eventually discover it wasn't that cure they were expecting according to what they read, but they were sure it is good for them - so continued to take them. Then they began reporting increased brain confusion and other issues. If that sounds familiar and frustrating, we're here to say that is ok, we've all been, ah well...dupped at one time or another. So here is a short guide to take the frustration out of looking for a healthy fat.
Why are fats needed?
Plant and food components often have an affinity to certain locations in the human body. Healthy fats contribute to the health of our Brain, Nervous System, Eyes and Liver because the tissue is comprised with higher essential fatty acids than elsewhere in the body or mostly fat. It is essentiel to life. In the article "Demystifying Fats" November 2014 Massage Magazine states this nicely, " Fat insulates nerve fibers and increases nerve impulse transition rates, allowing you to move and respond faster. Fat protects organs by providing both shock absorption and insulation. Fat helps transport nutrients and metabolites across the cell membranes. Fat is needed for the assimilation of fat-soluble vitamins and is used as a building block for hormones, neurotransmitter and immune cells." They are now becoming popular for brain health and diminishing pain from inflammatory conditions. But are they really doing that for you? If not, then why not?
In the 1997 published book, "Ebraced by the Essence, Your Journey Into Wellness Using Pure Quality Essential Oils" Marcy Foley, D.C., N.D., quoted Dr. Michael Schmidt as saying; "I often noticed one thing in common about many older people - they smelled like rancid fat and they complained about memory problems or "senility". Marcey goes on to state, " This is the smell you experience in driving past a fast food restaurant. When we eat fried foods or unnaturally hydrogenated fats (as in shortening, vegetable oils or margarine), we rob the body of oxygen and clog up the brain. Perhaps the combination of supplementing the diet with essential fatty acids in the Omega 3 category, plus the use of essential oils, and taking other free radical scavengers, we can reverse this rancidity, and positively affect the health of the brain tissue."
When is a healthy fat - not healthy?
Today we can see the same thing occurring with those taking flavored, gel or capsuled essential fatty acids - fish oils. Due to poor manufacturing, handling and storage business is bringing an already rancid product to your shelf... and mouth. What this means for you may be consuming an already rancid fatty acid going to your brain and having the same oxidyzing free radical damage as with unnatural hydrolyzed fats; noticed years ago and published like we just quoted.
--Another way this occurs is that you may find a high quality oil but are unable to digest these oils to a bioavailable state. Such as when you do not have a gall bladder.
--The undigestable or excess oils have a tendency to be moved into the Chyle of the Lymphatic System, in turn because of the anotomical location, then is moved to the thoracic duct; slowing the operation of the lymphatic system. These unusable excess fats begin to broaden the base for other potential health problems. (This can and does happen with fried and unhealthy fats for people with gall bladders as well.) I have had numerous clients when giving manual integrated bodywork therapies, have phyxotrophied lymph in their duct that required time to manually open and drain this portion of the Lymphatic System. These individuals fit into the categories of regularly eating unnaturally hydrogenated and trans fats such as fast foods, donuts etc. overloading their gall bladder;
taking excessive quantities of essentiel fatty acid supplements with lymph and digestive problems and those doing so with no gall bladder. Some were referred to the high fatty acid program by practitioners and others because of reading it on the internet and well meaning friends. With the advanced Lymph Drainage Therapy I was able to open these clogged pipes and offer lifestyle education to support their goals and act proactively with their health.
--Taking large to excessive quantities, or simply taking too much... Ttoo much of a good thing can tip the scale to negative.
--When you have bought it from Wal-Mart, Wal-Greens, Sam's or Costco and Internet; cheaper processing and longer storage - meaning older. Doing the cheaper thing for your health is not cheaper.
What To Do? Fact...
Eat healthy saturated fats from natural sources such as grass-fed organic beef, organic butter, organic milk, coconut oil and milk, and eggs. This does not include conventionally raised animals fed corn and soy, the toxins the animal is exposed to are stored in their fat; and partially trans fats. Soy is categorized as a trans fat.
Monosaturated fats found in pure olive oil, coconut oil and grapeseed oil, have a high heat tolerance for cooking. Avacados, sesame (tahini) butter, walnuts and other pure nuts are also healthy when not rancid at the market; as long as you don't have a nut allergy and caution is in order with IBS and other bowel issues.
Sunflower and Safflower oil are good also organic and fresh (not rancide) but should never be heated. This has been know for decades, but as with many healthy facts, the facts get plowed into the ditch in todays world of advertisement - money - marketing.
Polyunsaturated fats: or any fat that has room for additional hydrogen to attach to it, such as Omega-3's Omega 6's and 9's and 18's. (More to come in the future about these.)
--Enzymes: Quality enzymes that break down the fats so that the body can utilize them is a very good solution. Enzymes of high quality have been clinically successful as a component of Lymphedema Management. Lymphedema is where the Lymphatic system has been compromised to a degree and requires a different approach to consuming fatty foods. For Lymphedema patients essentiel fats should be limited to mid and low chained fatty acid foods. Remember, even in todays organic market, oils that were never meant to be heated are used in organicly prepared food and chips that require assistance even for the healthy to maintain healthy cardiovascular function.
--Coffee and Butter: 2 food items you consume that should "always" be organic! This is because of their direct impact on the brain and liver. (Note Coffee with gentle flavors even when organic should be avoided because of the soy used.)
--Fats should be eaten with meals containing protein:
An Italian chef uses the mathmatical rule "Golden Ratio" and your own hand as a map with weight loss and management. He teaches that the fingers should equal your carbohydrates in the form of vegetables with a small percentage of grain. The cupped palm of your hand should be the protein amount and your thumb the amount of fatty acid foods. The qualifying point is the ratio. He taught, if you strictly adhere to this rule you may eat thus 5 meals daily, and increase metabolic function.
Where can I find good fatty acids and enzymes to cover this nutritional base?
